Understanding Single Tooth Implants

FAQs

Why Should I Choose a Single Tooth Implant Over a Bridge?

Compared to dental bridges, single tooth implants have a number of benefits. Bridges usually last 10-15 years, while implants can easily last 30+. Most patients keep their implants for the rest of their lives. While implants are usually more costly upfront, the long lifespan of an implant means that in the long-term, they are the best investment in your oral health. In addition, dental implants strengthen your jaw and prevent bone loss, while dental bridges do not. Single tooth dental implants also feel more natural and require less care than dental bridges.

How Are Single Tooth Implants Placed?

During your consultation, Dr. Kirk will use x-rays and images of your mouth to create an implant placement plan. Then, you’ll come in for your first appointment and he will clean and numb your mouth. Next, a small opening will be created in your gums and jaw, and the implant will be inserted. The area will be cleaned and sutured shut to complete the placement procedure.

Next, you’ll need to recover from treatment. Before your crown can be attached to your implant, the site must heal and undergo the process of “osseointegration.” This is a process that integrates the implant with the surrounding jaw bone, and it typically takes about 3-6 months. During this time, Dr. Kirk will work closely with a dental lab to create your crown.

When your jaw bone has healed completely, you’ll come in for a follow-up appointment. Dr. Kirk will check the dental crown to make sure it fits perfectly, then bond it into place to complete your implant procedure.

What Is the Recovery Time for a Single Tooth Implant?

Bruising, swelling, and discomfort are common after your implant is placed, and you’ll need to follow the recovery instructions provided by Dr. Kirk to ensure that it heals properly. Most patients are able to get back to their normal, day-to-day lives after just 24-48 hours, and these symptoms should disappear after about 7-10 days.
